2012 BMW 6-Series Coupe Officially Revealed, 118 High-Res Pictures for Your Viewing Pleasure

|

BMW has put the top on its all-new 2012 6-Series with the presentation of the Coupe model ahead of its world premiere at the Shanghai Auto Show in China in April. The new 6-Series Coupe comes shortly after the convertible model that received its public debut at this year’s Detroit Motor Show in January.

Based on last year’s ‘BMW Concept 6 Series Coupe’, the styling of the Bavarian firm’s premium GT is the work of BMW design boss Adrian van Hooydonk, who replaced Chris Bangle in 2009. The new 6er feature s a far less controversial but somewhat more bland styling that its predecessor with a pronounced front end sporting a busy set of headlamps and auxiliary lights and a relatively low roofline.

At 4,894mm long, 1894mm wide and 1,369mm tall, the 2+2 coupe is 75mm longer, 39mm wider and 5mm lower than its predecessor. It also rides on a 75mm longer wheelbase at 2,855mm, which promises to improve space for the rear passengers. Boot capacity stands at 460 liter or 16.24 cu.ft.

The interior design is the same as on the soft-top model, with the more driver-orientated cockpit and the large display on the center console standing out.

At launch, the new 6-Series Coupe will be offered with a choice of two powerplants, a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six for the 640i and a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 for the 650i. Both the 650i Coupe and 640i Coupe transfer their power to the rear wheels via a standard eight-speed Sports automatic gearbox with steering wheel shift paddles. However, in the U.S., BMW will also offer a 6-speed manual gearbox for the 650i Coupe.

The 640i’s straight-six produces 320 hp at 5,800 rpm and 450Nm (332 lb-ft) of peak torque between 1,300 and 4,500 rpm, allowing the coupe to complete the sprint from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.4 seconds, and reach an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). Average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle stands at 7.7lt / 100km (equal to 30.6 mpg US), while CO2 emissions come in at 179 g/km.

In EU-spec, the 650i’s V8 engine kicks out 407 hp from its 4.4-litre displacement between 5,500 and 6,400 rpm and a peak torque of 600Nm (443 lb-ft) between 1,750 and 4,500 rpm, for 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time of 4.9 seconds and an electronically-limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). It returns a combined fuel economy of 10.4 lt/100km (equal to 23.1 mpg US) in the EU test cycle, together with CO2 emissions of 243g/km.

In U.S.-spec, the 650i’s V8 delivers 400 hp between 5,500 and 6,400 rpm, and makes peak torque of 450 lb-ft between 1,750 and 4,500 rpm for a 0-60mph (96km/h) acceleration time of 4.8 seconds with either the 6-speed manual or the 8-speed automatic transmission.

The 640i and 650i Coupes will go on sale in Europe this fall while the 650i Coupe arrives in US showrooms this fall as well.

I don't like those recessed headlight indicators...only in the 80's you could see that...shame...

Looks flashy and big, and a bit tacky. The Maserati Gran Turismo is a million times better.

i dont like the wjole front end... :/ the back is nice, but the front looks fat

The front ruin it , Other wise it is a very nice car but my money would never buy this car with that front nose no matter how good rest of the car is. It is just too long in the front. It looks bad from the front views and front side views where from the back and back side views it looks real nice. Inside interior is great. How ever I just can't get past the shark long nose that is just too long for the car. I bet this car would look good in a fun house where the front make look shorter. I can see the pic chops already with BMW fans trying to fix this cars front end.

Love the interior. What's that thing that pops up over the GPS? The exterior though is just alright. I'm not liking BMW's new front end treatment at all. It just looks odd to me. For the kind of money this car is going for, I think there's better options out there.

This CARSCOOP posting is a keeper.

I first experienced a CS model BMW in 1964 when a friend of my uncles brought 3200CS(V-8) home from Germany. Had a few rides in it over the years and have been a fan ever since.

Thanks for the posting CARSCOOP

Too conservative. The entire idea of the 6 series is a super revolutionary sports coupe. It's supposed to grab attention. Instead this just looks like a dressed up 5 series.

Ahh what a shame, Beemer seems to be in a reactionary stance against it's Bangle years - ie. conservative design that is unfortunately bland to my eyes. This could have been something really special like what one comment mentioned - the Masserati, or a more financially approachable Aston Martin. There is some great design out there that pushes the envelope but has widespread appeal. This ain't it. Kudos on some of BMWs new hybrid prototypes though.

I don't have any positive or negative comment on this car, but does it look hot? no. does it look ugly? maybe! does it look unpleasant vehicle? hmm. probably its different in real life.

Okay dammit I'm gonna say it.....this sucks! the front end is beautiful but the rear just gets long and bland. I was not a fan of the previous model but I did love the fastback silhouette of it even the so called whale tail. Sure bangle's designs weren't perfect but at least they were a radical departure from bland design. A perfect design would have meshed the front of this onto the previous design and maybe SLIGHTLY scale down the whale tail. At least the front end of this says BMW, the previous gen grill and headlights were a derivative of the Z9 concept which really never stayed in align with BMW classic design cues. The rear of this car just looks like it has a flat ass, and who likes a flat ass?

Boring! BMW is stepping backwards now - building cars for old people. Yawn...

maybe they dont want it to look too good or nobody will take out the extra cash for the M6, and its as disappointing as the new C class coupe, germans gone for conservative..Again

"Instead this just looks like a dressed up 5 series."

Thatg's what the 6 is; a coupe 5.

Wow! BMW has introduced a vehicle in a color other than crap gray? Those are some wild and crazy guys over at BMW! I wonder if they broke out the non-alcoholic champagne after the release of these pictures. Settle down boys, and get back to work; you still need to do something about those jelly bean designs that you're so fond of.

I am a big fan of BMW, i love it... but in this moment, all series look the same (smaller or bigger) WTFFFF ? This is extreme boring ffs. I'm not a fan of AUDI or Mercedes, but with the new CLS, or A5...they rock.

I think all these "fancy" cars should be more outrageous, to get your attention, make you say "WWWWWWOOWWWW"

Should follow the example of Lamborghini, they don't give a shit about anything, only creates magic in the heart of every man.

I dont like the look at all

Anonymous said... »March 16, 2011

It's still UGLY! BMW should drop the Chris Bangle crap and return to the clean designs it had before.

Anonymous said... »March 17, 2011

Nice looking, but it lacks personality... I've got one of the old E24 6 series (635CSi), and I'm obviously biased, but this car could use a bit of its history in that design. Right now it just looks like a Mercedes coupe with kidney grills.

Anonymous said... »March 18, 2011

i think some of the black tape got caught under the designer's chin...

Anonymous said... »March 21, 2011

I dont think it's ugly, not at all. Is gorgeous? Does it have that "I wanna have it" appeal as someone above pointed as the A5 of CLK? ...no.

It's more elegant in a way and restrained from the overweight 6 series, but it's not as elegant, pretty, balanced, etc., as the previous models shown in the pics above.
