You probably think Sweden is all about IKEA, ABBA and Volvos. Of course you do because, like me, you base all your cultural assumptions on asinine, outmoded stereotypes. Though few would be so willing to admit it, we’ve all done it from time to time, mostly when drunk off our backsides around the family barbie.
So what if I told you the Swedes – well, a few of them anyways – were big into racing stripped out, turbocharged Volkswagen Scirocco’s packing AWD and 627 hp (468 kW)? And not simply racing them but racing them on snow and ice. You heard right, and we have the video to prove it.
Sadly, we don’t know much more about the car and its driver than what we’ve given so far; our Swedish isn’t even as good as our grammatically flawed German and poorly enunciated French. Still, it’s a fun video to watch, and the sonorous sound of the turbo gives me goosebumps all down my back.

Ikea is more exciting. Golf is more exciting than Ikea, and I don't mean a VW Golf.
Despite the fantastic noise the real shock comes when they lift the bonnet! The engine is mounted longitudinally (!!!) unlike production Sciroccos and also it is positioned behind the front wheels unlike any Volkswagen or Audi. This is classic RWD setup but if the car is indeed 4WD then it probably uses a modified Audi quattro system with 3 differentials and not Volkswagen's Haldex based 4motion system. This thing should drive fantastically. Only problem is that they couldn't fit a longer engine in so they used what it looks like a 2 liter TFSI engine which is a phenomenal engine but it doesn't have the sound of the new 5 cylinder developed for the TT RS and the RS3.
Volswagen's new WRC car?
Sounds like an electric RC car inside.
Swedes have been racing on ice for...like forever. Where have you been Tristan?
Anon #1: Yes, I'm sure that your 1998 Impala is more exciting than a 600+ hp Scirocco or a new Golf. Get a life, moron.
Anon #6: Thanks for your comment Sarah, but we all don't live in Alaska , but , I am suprised you new I drive a Chev. It's not a 1998, it's a 1967 427 Vette.
Why am I responding to a malcontent who thinks only his opinion is valid. You must be an American.
"Volswagen's new WRC car?" Most likely a Polo or the Up!/Lupo.
