2012 VW Beetle in the Flesh with New Gallery and Videos

|

We reported on the unveiling of the all-new 2012 Beetle yesterday, but since then we got our hands on a slew of fresh photos shot during the presentation of the car in Shanghai, as well as in Manhattan, New York, and Berlin in Germany.

For the most part, the first reviews on the ‘less flower, more power’ styling direction of the New Beetle’s replacement in general do appear to be on the positive side, but for Volkswagen, this needs to translate into consumer spending when the car goes on sale this fall.

The first new Beetle in 13 years will reach U.S. shores in September offering consumers three engine choices including VW's 170HP 2.5-liter, five-cylinder petrol, a 140HP 2.0-liter TDI diesel, and a 200HP 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo petrol engine. Buyers in the rest of the world will get a more modern lineup comprising of two 1.6-liter diesels with 105HP and 140HP, and a pair of turbocharged gasoline units, a 160HP 1.4-liter TSI and a 200HP 2.0-liter TSI.

I NEVER thought I would this, and I really do want to see, and drive it in real-life, but I sure like what I see so far.

Looks like a cross between the old (1998) New Beetle and an Audi TT... or a Chrysler Crossfire. It looks better, & they seemed to have reduced the too-long dashboard to a reasonable length... but it still lacks the practicality that a hatchback should have.

Does these wheels look like cheap aftermarket ones ? Yes. Does they not fit properly ? Yes.
Most of the VW and Audis must be all the same in tha past 10 years, I just don't get this. It's so much cheaper and easier for them to give the same looking car, a bit tweaked.

the beetle is officially off my chic car list. there are only 2 chic cars on my list and the other one is the nissan micra convertible. This actually looks alright, and maybe even closer to the original.

The real chic (chick) cars are all the Dodge and Chrysler special editions beacause all the special edition enhansments are cosmetic.

Tweak the front end styling a bit more (a la the original Speedster) and put 260-300hp from the R-Line TSI to the rear wheels (AWD?), and you would have an affordable Porsche alternative. This vehicle has tons of potential for some fun driving considering that it is based on the Golf VI platform and could get performance bits from the Golf R parts bin.

Put lipstick on a pig but it will still be a pig...

Much less feminine than the old one, i.e. uglier, and that's a good thing!
