465 Horses Make the 2012 Grand Cherokee SRT8 the Fastest Jeep Ever

|

Jeep has given the SRT treatment to its flagship Grand Cherokee and the result is the creation of the firm’s fastest and most potent production model ever. How does a 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) acceleration of 4.8 seconds or a quarter mile time in the mid-13 second range sound? This is what the Grand Cherokee SRT8 is capable of, and the reason for these figures lies under the SUV's bonnet.

The Chrysler Group’s Street and Racing Technology division (SRT for short) equipped the performance SUV with an all-new 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine that delivers 465 horsepower and 465 lb-ft (630 Nm) of torque.

Compared to the outgoing model powered by the 6.1-liter HEMI V8 unit, the new Grand Cherokee SRT8 has an extra 45HP and 45 lb-ft (61 Nm) of torque. About 90 percent of peak torque is available between 2,800 and 6,000 rpm. The Grand Cherokee SRT8 can do 0-100-0 mph in the mid-16 second range and has a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).

Standard Fuel Saver Technology and a new active valve exhaust system mean the engine can run on 4 cylinders alone on a wider rpm range, delivering better mileage (up to 13 percent better on the highway) and an extended range of around 450 miles (724 km) on one tank of gas.

The engine is linked to an automatic transmission with standard paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel. The Quadra-Trac AWD system can transfer up to 100 percent of available torque to one rear wheel in slippery conditions. Add to that the adaptive damping suspension and the five-mode Selec-Track system that tunes the dynamics of the car and you have a complete picture of the SRT8's on and off-road capabilities. Jeep says the SUV is capable of 0.90 g on the skid pad and that it can brake from 60 mph in 116 feet (35.3 meters).

The 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 has the looks to match its performance, thanks to its lowered body (by 1 inch/2.5 cm) and the SRT body kit comprising of wheel arches and side sills painted in the car's color, plus a racing-style front bumper that sports LED daytime running lights and a large air intake in the lower part.

Other modifications include the body-colored grille with a black background and chrome inserts and the sculpted hood fitted with dual black heat extractors for added engine cooling. At the rear, the Grand Cherokee SRT8 features a new spoiler, a new bumper with integrated air diffuser and dual exhaust system.

The interior features a dedicated heated steering wheel, special SRT instrument panel, Nappa leather and suede upholstery and carbon trim, among others. The car debuted today at the New York Auto Show and will reach U.S. showrooms in third quarter of the year.

I'm not a domestic guy - but that's a badass truck that I would consider.

Can a car have a double chin? Somebody needs to readdress the bumper and ground effects up front. The incorporation of the lower front LED lights and scoops create a disorienting visual. It looks as if somebody in the shop has proposed to use spare air scoops from another project to go with extra lighting that somebody else had suggested to use in an earlier board room meeting. Not enough to stimulate gag reflexes but enough say maybe we need to do something about it, because we CAN do better.

The original Grand Cherokee SRT8 looked and was the part. Why all the effeminate silly chrome bits around the grill opening and front spoiler; rims suck too; chrome bits at the rear hatch suck. The exterior is a softer, gentler, styling that blows chunks. This model has no edge, and has lost its edge. It's been pussified!

Dont care how fast it is, its a Chrysler!!!!
I would take a Cayenne, Toureg, RX, FX, GX, over this in a heartbeat. You must be blind or stupid or blind and stupid to even concider this garbage. Hell hate to say it but even a Escalade I would take over this.

Jeep=poor white redneck car
Chrysler=poor white mans car

Go finance these out to some African-americans

I find SRTs typically driven by closet-homos. The ones in denial and think hey look how straight I am I have a big loud engine that will fool them. Well think again, also alot of men seem to be compensating, women get it lol!

Guys, you may not like the cars that Chrysler makes but there is no need to use derogatory language that marginalize people from different racial backgrounds or gender.

After reading your post you have no right to call anyone or thing"stupid." Stay in school or go back. Than again you are most likely too stupid to understand.

Its call choices. And no matter what you think of this Jeep, it is one awesome SUV! I'm sure you never even driven anything that is worth mentioning however I have. For the value the SRT8, it is the better SUV of the vehicles you mentioned. And this new Jeep is better than the previous one. Get a clue before you speak.

"Go finance these out to some African-americans" First of all shame on carscoop for letting this morons post get approved! And second of all, just how stupid and obviously illiterate are you?

This site is supposed to be dedicated to cars and people who love cars. No one needs to be subjected to such ignorant speech. Jeeps are great vehicles and just because you don't like them it doesn't mean that the people who buy them are "stupid". I'm confident in believing that if you really want to know what stupid looks like, you just need to look in the mirror.

I agree with the poster that SRTs are driven by closet homos, but this thing is pointless in many ways, only white trash rednecks would be caught dead in this crap.
People with class would opt for any of the choices someone mentioned already.

As for the comment

"Go finance these out to some African-americans"

I would but they never get approved!!!

Lol good one, but they dont need financing, they will just steal it from the stupid redneck homo lol

damn nice, would be nice if the gas price drops rock bottom, I say why not just use up all the oil for now, no need to worry about our children's future, let them worry about it when they become adults.

For all the liberal loving african-Americans, I bet you all don't let your kids go out there in the "hood" and play...
And yes, lets face it, Chrysler is most driven by black people, especially 300, and what to say about Dodge Charger? Even that I like the car, I would never buy it because of this fact, I never seen a with man in one.
And not to be off topic, I like the new Grand Cherokee, but I don't dig that new front, something is not in place with the bumper, I prefer the Overland version.

they deff coulda done a better job on the front. it just looks....swollen.

Why does Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep bring out all the racist redneck bloggers?
Easy, the only place they sell these cars is the dumbed down United Bigots of America.

i'm an african that appreciates the styling and handling of german cars. However, some of the derogatory comments on here are just racist.
Its sad pussies only use such words on message boards under anonymous names so they can hide. I wish someone would say this out in public and get left outlined in chalk where they said it.
carscoop, please start filtering this CRAP. This is a car for car lovers, not RACISTS! get a life!!

"equipped the performance SUV with an all-new 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine that delivers 465 horsepower and 465 lb-ft (630 Nm) of torque." Why?

Chrysler (and other car companies) should only be focusing on technology so all of their vehicles can exceed 50 mpg (hwy & city) and technology to improve safety.

Shame this car doesn't have that 8spd that Chrysler's been hinting at for a few months now. The Hemi, while a good motor, needs to be updated. Why not direct injection? Put some hot rod parts inside like a lightweight steel crank, forged pistons, dry sump oiling, aluminum block, hydraulic roller cam, aluminum roller rockers, special heads etc. and then balance/blueprint the assembly. If it's is an SRT, then Chrysler should trick it out making this SUV a platform for some cool high perf options. Just bumping up the cubes and mating it to a tired, old 5 spd was a mistake. Still though, it's light years ahead of the last model and it looks pretty good inside and out. It'll sell if gas doesn't go through the roof.

I'm a little disappointed with the back end and the rims but the 6.4 is definately an improvement. I was under the impression it was going to be 500 hp 8 spd with 22" rims? Guess they threw it out when they decided to move the exhaust from the center which in my opinion is one of the best features of the old models. Who the hell buys a SRT8 and want to tow with it anyway? I just lost my 2010 to a careless dealership and I'm hoping I'm not down grading with the new one.
