2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster Officially Revealed : 68 High-Res Photos [Updated]

|

Little by little, Mercedes-Benz is releasing more photos and information on its 2012 SLS AMG Roadster ahead of the supercar’s world premiere at the forthcoming Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Following the release of a barely disguised car earlier this month, the German company’s PR tease continues today with the first official photos of the roadster version of the SLS AMG without any kind of camouflage.

We also get to learn that the three-layered fabric soft top will not eat in the roadster model’s trunk area as its capacity remains at 6.1 cubic feet with the roof either open or closed, and is roughly the same to that of the SLS AMG Coupe, which stands at 6.2 cubic feet. The fully automatic top is available in three colors – black, beige and a classic red. It opens and closes in eleven seconds, and can be operated on the move at speeds up to 31 mph or 50km/h.

Like other open-top Mercedes models, the SLS AMG Roadster is equipped with the firm’s AIRSCARF system that warms the head and neck areas of the driver and passenger by blowing hot air from vents integrated in the head restraints. Other standard features include a black designo leather treatment, heated AMG sports seats, a detachable glass windstop, COMAND with Navigation and DVD player, anti-theft alarm system with tow-away protection and interior monitoring, dual-zone automatic climate control and the KEYLESSGO starting function.

There are no surprises under the hood with the roadster sharing the coupe model’s AMG 6.3-liter V8 mounted just behind the front axle and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that drives the rear wheels. In North American specification, the naturally aspirated eight-cylinder engine delivers 563 hp and 479 pound-feet of torque, while the European model is rated at 571 horsepower and 650 Nm (480 lb-ft) of torque.

Sales of the SLS AMG Roadster will begin this fall.

It looks cheap with those black rims.

Seriously, this automobile is just plain damn ugly. Hey, but it cost a lot, and there are seat provisions for the driver's and passenger's stick up their asses. Sometimes MB doesn't get it right; hence, the SLS models.

@ numbnuts

Order it with chrome wheels.

@ seriously

Don't buy one, the top is too low for your fat head anyway.

Not everyone can have good taste

If the SLS is good taste then the world needs a redo. It's about branding, but certainly not good taste. Mercedes has done so much better than this awkward styling exercise, and rush to market automobile.

"Not everyone can have good taste"

Who says this is of 'good taste'? It's a convertible and therefore it disabuses itself instantly from 'good taste'.

ALL convertibles are valueless. The SLS should have never been offered as a convertible.

Do you two arm chair designers have a monopoly on design opinion?

I have my opinion you have yours, excersize your likes and dislikes and buy some other car.
What is with "branding" and "converibles",

Was the e type roadster less of a car than the coupe?

Nothing annoys car buffs more than general bashing by nameplate.

MB has built many fine cars for over a 100 yrs.

"Was the e type roadster less of a car than the coupe"

A resounding YES; along with every other convertible ever made by ANY automaker. This most certainly isn't 'bashing by nameplate' if EVERY convertible is considered as being in poor taste.

With new Designo trim levels, a car of the caliber can be a bespoke model, as with my Bentley GTC. As one poster mentioned, choose your wheels to your liking.

@Pete Moss

What's your problem dude?
I am talking about the rims, which definitely do not fit to a Merc, not about the car.

" What's your problem dude?"
I can't stand pointless comments.... read my answer.... if you like the car and not the rims take an optional wheels....the comments lame.

I think this convertible is far more good looking from the coupe, because it's less egged shape.

Is it cheaper than the coupe ? Because I recon it should be, since it's not a "gullwing" anymore :>

A sweet ride, certainly one of the best cars on the road and my choice for a performance car I'd want to live with on a daily basis, my daily driver must be a convertible. :)

My only quibble being that the white should be offered with a white top, like the red version. Putting a beige top on this car is sacrilege, an option chosen only by wealthy elites who buy cars as status symbols, those who have no true appreciation for what it really is. Shame on Mercedes for continuing to offer the ubiquitous beige top on this beauty.
