A peek through the European patent office files revealed images of Honda’s freshly launched in North America, 2012 Civic in both four-door sedan and two-door coupe guise. Given that the European market will get its own, bespoke version of the Civic, chances are that Honda simply wanted to cover its back like most of the competition just in case another automaker (we are looking towards you China) got any crazy ideas.
However, it is possible that Honda will offer the four-door saloon model in certain European countries to compete against the Volkswagen Jetta. With the exception of one version of the Civic sedan seen in this set of images and which features slightly modified taillights with additional strips that extend towards the license plate holder, there are no other differences compared to the North American Civic.
The European version of Honda’s compact model will make its world premiere at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show in September. It will be available in five-door and three-door body styles, while the Japanese automaker has also confirmed the development of a smaller displacement turbo diesel engine that will fit right under the current 2.2-liter i-DTEC unit.

No point in patenting Honda, no one's gonna rip this ugly design off.
Not even the Chinese.
Give it a break, this uncalled for verbal attack on Honda gets old..real old. If you don't like them don't buy them. But Honda seems to be doing pretty well regardless of those who have nothing good to say.
Actually Hyundai's better and no, we dont buy into Honda's BS.
They better be quick to get the patent of it because, toyota might bring out the same ugly thing in the market place. They really need to get ride of their design staff. these Japanese companies must have competition among them self which one will bring the most ugly car in the market. Good think every 3 years new one is out
These patents are necessary other wise you will have blatant ripoffs like the Volt.
first ,the volt concept came out way before this 12 civic did and second the volt and 12 civic looks nothing alike. This 12 civic is very bla looking to say the truth of the matter.
WOW ,This poor car is so ugly. Honda why punish the civic owners and lovers with this new take on the civic?
I won;t be trading in my 2005 Honda civic for this 2012 honda civic. I guess I swill look at the 2012 Hyundai Elantra , 2012 Ford Focus or the 2012 updated mazda 3 , now that the Honda Civic is off my shopping list I only have to look at 3 models and not 4 models now.
The rear end reminds me of a 90's Nissan Altima mated with a Pontiac Sunfire, mated with a last generation Toyota Camry. Talk about your ultimate dispose-a-mobile!
