New Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 35 Comes with 235-Horsepower

|

This year, Volkswagen is celebrating the 35th anniversary of the introduction of the original Golf GTI in 1976, and to mark the event, the German carmaker has unleashed a special version, named “Edition 35”. As with the “Edition 30” launched in 2006, the latest anniversary model benefits from an upgraded and more powerful engine as well as discreet styling tweaks that differentiate it from the standard Golf GTI.

Starting with the mechanical updates, the GTI's 2.0-liter turbocharged TSI engine is tuned to deliver an extra 25 horsepower, for a total of 235 horsepower. The increase in output should improve the hot hatch’s performance, but Volkswagen has not yet revealed any official figures, simply stating that the car will be more fun to drive. The automaker didn't say whether the “Edition 35” will feature a lower suspension than the stock car, as was the case with the “Edition 30”.

The changes on the outside include new, bespoke alloy wheels, blacked-out headlights and taillights, darkened rear and tailgate windows and glossy black finish on the grille and mirror caps. In addition, the headlights also feature LED daytime running lights, and the front fenders are adorned with “35” plates.

In the interior, the “Edition 35” motive is also present on the door sills, the head rests and the center of the seats. The latter sport a fabric upholstery that has a honeycomb-like pattern instead of the standard model's tartan theme. Another change is the golf ball-shaped gearshift lever.

The VW Golf GTI Edition 35 is already available to order in Germany with a starting price of €30,425 ($43,885). First deliveries are expected in mid June. The car's official launch will take place at the famous Worthersee GTI Meet (June 1-4), where Volkswagen will offer more details on the car.

Well, thats disappointing!

As a VW fanboy, I should probably like it, but I don't. There isn't enough that's different to a normal GTI. The MK4 GTI 180 style wheels should've been left in the noughties, they weren't nice on that so why replicate them?

The Anniversary models normally get quicker, this has 5bhp less than the Ed30, which also has better build, better interior and better rear suspension.

Buy an S3, the prices won't be that far apart!

VWNA - WE WOULD RATHER HAVE A AWD HIGH OUTPUT SCIROCCO. If I can't have it, the upcoming Mercedes A-Class is quickly becoming my vehicle of choice in this segment. Come on VW, get that Scirocco to the US.

At least the wheels are much better than the GTI stock ones.

$43,885? Are you serious? I mean, it's "nice", but it's a Golf fer krise sake. If you're dropping $44k on a hot hatch, you may as well start buying much better upscale cars.

@ for Christ's sake
Subaru wrx sti is 48,000 euros which is about $68,000. in Germany. What upscale car can you get for $44,000 in Germany. Basic 3 series bmw coupe is 35,000 euros or $54,000.
What car were you thinking of.
Taxes on cars are different in every country so it is difficult to compare prices country to country.

@ Moss, "Christ" was deliberately spelt incorrectly as to be non offensive; which you have now, unfortunately, made. Regardless. In the US a $44K "Golf" (notice the quotations) makes one question the sensibility of such a purchase when, again, in the US, $44 will buy you a premium BMW or Audi which are not only better cars for the money (in my opinion), but probably worth more in the long run. Furthermore, the basic BMW coupe in Germany costs 27K (Euro)INCLUDING TAX. Please use FACTUAL data (yes, this information is posted on the BWW website in Germany).
