Rumors: Range Rover Mulling “Grand” Evoque

|

The Range Rover Evoque hasn’t even hit the market yet, according to a report from UK’s Autocar, Land Rover’s people are debating whether or not to add a bigger version to its line-up, which at the time being, consists of a "coupe-ish" 3-door model and a more practical 5-door variant.

If the British company goes ahead with this plan, it would allow them to bridge the gap that exists in the marque’s (Range Rover, not Land Rover) range between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport.

This “Grand” Evoque would bebased on the LR-MS platform that underpins the other two versions, stretched by around 300 mm to provide more ample space for passengers as well as a larger boot and may also spawn a (long-rumored) Jaguar SUV.

The design is expected to retain most of the Evoque’s rather striking characteristics, since Land Rover’s designers believe that there is a market for sporty and distinctive, yet not overtly aggressive (such as BMW’s X6) large SUVs.

As for the drivetrains, the logical choice would be to keep the Evoque’s 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines, in front and four-wheel drive configurations.

Two-door version = beautiful, functional
Four-door version = Juke, non-functional

I can see the point in stretching the platform to make a Jaguar branded SUV. But making a bigger baby Range Rover, the whole point behind the Evoque in the first place just seems misguided.

"btw, the nissan juke is awesome..."
Suuuuuure, if you want kids pointing fingers at you; a rear seating area that doesn't even qualify as a joke; a center console that fails to place the correct information clusters in the right places; styling desperately crying for some, if not any, sort of styling.

The Juke is too cool. I really like it. Drove an AWD model. Have an Altima now.

This car is great, hopefully the reliability of it is too. I wouldnt mind the 5 door in black!

I like the Juke. Very refreshing and dashing. Just grew on me despite initial disagreement. Like the Evoque too but very much concerned about the reliability issues.

I love the looks of the car, but like the previous posts have mentioned, reliability and quality issues are a concern.

Also, I would be concern about the gas mileage figures for this car as well sincce Range Rovers are not really fuel efficient cars.

The vehicle does indeed look like the American made Ford Flex. Not just because of its shape, but the addition of a secondary colour roof. As with the Flex, I think if the vehicle is produced, it should become an option, not standard. It might look good in a solid colour, but choice would give it more appeal.

The interior is snazzy. Not too keen on the sheet metal.

this may not be the appropriate thread to bring up the nissan brand (but i did not initiate it), so to add my 2 cents, the nissan juke is one hot, affordable vehicle, especially in awd. my girlfriend was comparing the 2011 honda element (nice riding, unsurpassed quality) to the nissan cube (too slow, but stylish), scion xb (a good car with hordes of space) and toyota matrix (sold out: shortage, due to quake).

as a previous honda owner, the element was her first choice until i convinced her that since the element is being phased out with a replacement yet to be announced, we should buy something different until she trades again in 2-3 years. well, after suggesting a white awd juke with sexy black/red interior, she coughed up the extra $$$ and is thrilled with her first nissan ever.

now back on track...

the range/land rover's latest concept? if priced right, it should do well. not crazy about it from pics, but i bet it will become the brand's best seller. it has a "non-offensive look". it might not appeal to current RR/LR owners, but that's the point... the company needs to attract new, younger, hipper singles and family men and women to the brand.

i hated the two door until i saw one in person at this year's new york auto show. wow, seeing in up close makes me wonder how a more convenient four door might look like in the flesh. i should not judge it until then. hopefully, it will wow me like the "coupe".

Oops! I missed the all red model... it does look far better and less Ford Flex-like in monochromatic paint :)
