VIDEO: 2012 Corvette ZR1 Laps the 'Ring 6-Sec Faster than Previous Model, Beats GT-R by 5-Sec!

|

And the war on who has the fastest car on Germany’s famed Nurburgring racetrack continues. General Motors wasted no time after the release of its refined for the 2012 model year Corvette ZR1 to take its flagship sports car to the Nurburgring racetrack and try it out.

The 638-horsepower ZR-1 fitted with the optional Michelin Pilot Sport Cup Zero Pressure tires recorded a lap time of 7:19.63, improving the previous Corvette-best recorded time in 2008 by more than six seconds (7:26.40) and beating the 2012MY Nissan GT-R’s most recent run -allegedly in less than ideal conditions though- by close to five-seconds (7:24.22).

"Testing at the Nurburgring is one of the important methods we have to validate our car in the toughest track conditions," says Tadge Juechter, Corvette vehicle line director and chief engineer.

GM said it plans to release a video featuring the 2012MY Corvette Z06 on the Nordschleife as well within the next few weeks. Both the 2012 Corvette Z06 and ZR1 will go on sale in the States in July.

Have to give credit where credit is due, in one word: impressive.

I'm no fan of GM but the 'vette is no joke...if GM approached all of its product with such intensity and lazer focus, pontiac would've been the sporty sibling to chev. Caddy would still be a luxury marque and well, hummmer...that was just a plain bad idea, glad that garbage is done.

Hats off to GM...

Pushrods, traverse leaf springs, and a 6 speed.

Doing so much with so little.

the start time location was not the same as the end time location for the lap to be complete. fail! but still, add 3-5 seconds to 7:19 time is still impressive.

Great footage! Drove a Vette and loved the engine. Wife hated it...as per usual so we compromised & got a CTS-V.

Corvette ZR1 is sickest sport car driving experience i ever had among sport cars. And by sick i mean bad, really bad. Gee even sick these days is means good.
However talking about the car the drive is very stiff, really bad drive dynamics, more of a over the top torque machine. Bad interiors ONCE AGAIN- whats this corvette?
CHEAP SPEED.

Extremely capable car and driver.

Along with the 'GTR', this is a bargain performance vehicle.

Getting sideways at 120 MPH, makes 'drifters' look like sand box player, racer wannabees.

Corvette's have come along ways since the days of my old sixties Stingrays.

"more of a over the top torque machine"

When did anyone ever have a problem with torque? Afterall, engines make torque and horsepower is just a measurement of torque over time. Torque is your friend, not your enemy.

Torque matters.

Won't this BS ever die, the fact is the GT-R is a better car PERIOD.

Technologically the Corvette is a dinosaur, and in the world of racing they won't allow all wheel drive cars to compete because it's no contest. Rearwheel drive cars, particularly with the engine in front, are at a distinct disadvantage, especially in any kind of adverse weather conditions.

Let's run them both in the rain, the snow, the ice, in high wind., in all of those scenarios the Chevy winds up going into the ditch upside down trying to keep up.

Hell with the Nissan I can throw the kids in the back and give them the thrill of blowing away a Corvette. How embarrassing to see them waving and laughing as we go by the Vett spinning its wheels with bravado in a vain effort to hold on to it's last shred of machismo. :)

Sooner or later, most probably much later since we're talking about GM and all the old hacks that still run the company (and would still be running it into the ground if Pres. Obama and American taxpayers hadn't bailed them out) the Corvette will become an all wheel drive car, and no one will want to go back to the days of fishtailing out of control.
