Audi RS3 Sportback Takes on BMW 1 M Coupe in Quarter Mile Duel

|

The Audi RS3 Sportback and the BMW 1 M Coupe represent two very different approaches on the compact sport model segment.

Ingolstadt’s proposal is a five-door model that looks more like a hotted-up small station wagon than a hatchback. It features a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-five producing 340-horsepower and 450 Nm (331.90 lb-ft) linked to Audi’s all-wheel drive quattro system and a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

Munich’s proposition on the other hand is a more traditional take on the category boasting a coupe body style and a 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six pushing out an identical 340-horses (in EU-specification) and 450 Nm (331.90 lb-ft) to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox.

UK car magazine Autoexpress brought the two Germans sport models to the track to see which one is the king of straight-line performance. Even though their mechanical layouts should give you a hint about the winner, we won’t spoil the surprise. Scroll down to watch the duel for yourself.

both nice cars, but for me the Audi is a bit boring on the out side. I'll buy the BMW.

lol what useless test, a dual clutch against a 6 speed manual why not compare a manual to manual the dual cluth shifts far faster than a person in a manual everyone knows that making the car itself faster...............useless test

Irrelevant test. The true test when buying these cars is which would you rather own? Personally, I'd take the 1M any day.

Looks to me like the Audi got a jump on the 1///M...but yeah, the tranny should be the same for a proper test. I remember something similar with the S5 versus M3. In the end, the bimmer was declared a winner because it had 'soul'. So I am going to vote for the bimmer here...it looks less ordinary...it probably drives less ordinary too.

Agree with above. If it were my money I'd spend it towards a 1M any day.

I'd like to see which car is faster around a track and has better handling capabilities. I have a feeling the BMW would wipe the floor on a RS3.

the bmw is so ugly. I'll take the Audi any day, every day.

The fact is, the Audi is a superior vehicle in Literally all real world driving conditions, a fact that BMW engineers and some of the commenters here can't or won't accept. Doubtless the offspring of the BMW engineers and these commenters will certainly accept that reality when they are grown, provided they can overcome the brainwashing of their parents at some point. :)

One day virtually all BMWs will be all-wheel-drive, with the company and their customers benefiting from the technological developments that Audi achieved with their R&D... that's the facts jacks.

@ Aaron i think you mean 'safer' not 'superior'. Funnily enough a lot of car enthusiasts buy a performance car for how it'll drive on a perfect day, not how it will drive in 3 inches of snow and sleet ;)

BWW's FR set up is what makes a BMW a BMW - the only way they'll ever use four wheel drive is through putting small electric motors on the front wheels to keep the car lobbyists happy by reducing emissions. Even then, BMW's brandishing the 'M' badge will shun four wheel drive. FR is BMW's DNA just like 4WD is Audi's. Not sure how 4WD would benefit it's customers...BMW's sales are stronger than Audi's, especially in their performance car departments so they're customers are obviously pretty happy about something!

On to the cars:

If your immensely dull and want to spend 40k on an Audi that looks like every other A3 (hell, pretty much every other Audi) then buy the RS3. It's definately capable and fast but at the end of the day lacks the excitement of the BMW and you'll have to explain to every girl your trying to impress that your Audi in fact is a high performance one and you can tell that by the little RS3 badge on the grill.

On the other hand the BMW looks pretty good (at least different from a standard 1 series), and you can be sure that the addition of the 'M' badge means it will drive superbly (a point backed up by every car mag raving about it). I'll take mine in orange please.

Audi is a good car... however it is made specifically for those who want to go fast and DOESN'T have the skills and hability that a BMW M driver has... because a M car is for Drivers, and thats why they are designed like that... and also thats why my choose would be the 1M every day...
in my personal experience theres NOTHING like the M3 E92 (standar of course) even when i have driven a nunmer of audis, including the R8 (v8 4.2).
So... i don't care if it's "Superior" technology... i dont need it... thats why M cars oversold RS everytime....

I knew the Audi is going to win since they always put an AWD system into their cars. What sucks is its their reliability issues mainly because of what really happened to the RS4. Otherwise, European cars do depend on model to model. This one is what you guys need to watch out for.
