General Motor's newest proposal in the minivan segment, the 2012 Chevrolet Orlando, is so close but yet so far away for U.S. consumers. You see, the Detroit-based automaker today announced Canadian pricing for the Orlando before it arrives in dealers across the country in October 2011.
The South Korean-built people carrier hit European dealerships in the beginning of the year and even though the bigwigs over at GM had initially made plans to bring it over to the States, they reconsidered and decided to offer the 7-seater model only in Canada.
The 2012 Orlando will be available in Canada in three trim levels, with pricing set at CA$19,995 (US$20,260) for the LS model, CA$22,295 (US$22,591) for the LT and CA$29,735 (US$30,130) for the flagship LTZ model.
Power for all models comes from a 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine with direct-injection technology that delivers an output of 174-horses.
When hooked up to a six-speed manual, it delivers an estimated fuel consumption of 6.7lt/100km (35.1 mpg US) on the highway and 10.1 lt/100 km (23.3 mpg US) in the city, while the 6-speed automatic delivers 6.9 lt/100 km (34 mpg US) on the highway and 10.6 lt/100km (22.2 mpg US) in the city.
"The new Orlando builds on the transformation of Chevrolet's fuel efficient and versatile product portfolio, offering a family-friendly vehicle in a key segment in the Canadian market," said Kevin Williams, president and managing director of General Motors of Canada. "With its expected segment-leading fuel efficiency and standard 7-passenger seating, Orlando should be a popular choice with Canadian families."

174-hp? That must be a typo. A civic has 140-hp and moves 4 people....how can this reasonably move 7 passengers and baggage? I guarantee this isn't made out of carbon fiber and/or aluminum!!
What are they getting in terms of torque, 200+ ft-lb @ 1250-2250rpm? They better because if they're getting lower torque or worse 180 -190ft-lb comes in at 5500 rpm, there are going to be problems.
I'm not making a joke, this is a pretty serious oversight if this is the case and shows, once again, that the general puts to market product that isn't competitive and lacks in key areas.
I bet this is super safe and it seems to have good mileage but then again, so do other offerings on the market.
The glaring thing I see is the price. Base of 20K and maxing out @ 30K puts this in a territory few touch. A similar offering from honda would cost you 35K+
Maybe the koreans are in the ballpark. Considering this is a korean import, that could be the case.
I thought Chevy was trying to be a premium domestic, like VW, Honda, Hyundai, Toyota. Looks like it is destine to compete with the soon-to-come Chinese imports or Chrysler.
GM has no clue, 22-35 mpg in a small people mover, yeah no body here in the US wants that. Keep producing your trucks and truck based SUVs and moan that you can't meet future levels while we go from fuel crisis to fuel crisis.
Give the consumer a smaller more efficient option that's actually decent and you'd be surprised hoe many would bail from their current behemoth.
Our 2005ish Pontiac Montana has a 3.4L V6 that produces only 185hp. Albeit, the V6 probably provides more torque than this I4. BUT, we have a loaded Montana, so it's heavy and looks to be a bit bigger than this thing. So 174hp isn't really that outrageously low, but I could still see torque being an issue. But something has to go is you want 20+ mpg in the city with the ability to haul 7 people.
And I don't think you understand how huge Chevrolet is as a brand. I would consider all of their LTZ, and even some LT trims to be "premium domestic". But what's great about Chevrolet is that they give you the option of going kind of "mediocre domestic" with the LS trim. Also.. this car isn't even coming to the U.S. where it would be considered "domestic" so it's not like it will be able to taint (if it happens to be a bad car) whatever reputation Chevy has here.
Isn't Buick supposed to be GM's premium domestic anyways???
You guys spelt orlando as orland in the first paragraph.
i donl;t know about this suv mitchell, i think kids will not have a good view or be able to reach the window switches on this,. what do you think buddy? lol
to be honest 35 mpg from a small suv is pretty good., the hyundai and kia small suv both get about 35 mpg and hyundai kia lead in the mpg wars...
I spell Orlando as Odnalro ,,,,,which do you think?
Nope. This one looks pretty good. Nice lines and practical. Much better than the Hyundai. But I will say this is one of Chevrolet's blander designs.
They made a Canadian car and named it after a horrible US city...... Instead of something Canadian.
