2012 Toyota Camry: Officially Revealed, Pictured and Priced

|

It is finally here; the car many Americans love to hate buying, the brand-new, seventh-generation Toyota Camry, which was officially unveiled today ahead of its sales launch in States in the beginning of October.

If we wanted to highlight the most important features of the new 2012 Camry here's what we would go with: it's more powerful yet delivers better fuel efficiency, has a more upscale interior with higher quality materials, its styling is sharper but continues to be bland and will definitely not excite (on the other hand, it won't offend either), and finally, in some cases its priced lower than the outgoing model.

In more detail and starting from the engine range, the 2012 Camry will be offered with a choice of three powerplants. The base engine is a revised 2.5-liter four-cylinder unit delivering 178-horsepower, an increase of 9HP, and 170 lb.-ft. of peak torque. Toyota says EPA-estimated fuel economy figures are 25 mpg city/35 highway, and 28 mpg combined, an increase of 2mpg over the previous generation Camry.

Next up is a subtly refined 3.5-liter V6 that generates 268 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 248 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,700 rpm. According to the Japanese carmaker, it returns EPA-estimated ratings of 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway (previous model: 20mpg/29mpg respectively).

Both the four- and six-cylinder engines are offered with a six-speed automatic transmission that offers a sequential manual shift mode using the console shifter.

The third option is the 2012 Camry Hybrid that gains a overhauled version of the brand’s Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain, including a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder Atkinson engine that replaces the 2.4-liter unit.

Together, the gasoline and electric motors produce a combined output of 200 horsepower allowing the Camry to accelerate from 0-to-60mph (96km/h) in 7.6-seconds, which places it between the four-cylinder and V6 models.

Toyota says the new Camry Hybrid delivers an EPA-estimated 43 mpg city/39 mpg highway/41 mpg combined, which accounts to a more-than-30 percent boost in fuel economy in the EPA city and combined driving cycles, compared to the previous model.

According to Toyota, the improved fuel economy can be attributed largely to the new hybrid powertrain, but also due to lighter vehicle weight and optimized aerodynamics.

Also new for the 2012 Camry Hybrid is the EV Drive mode that allows the driver to operate the car on the electric motor alone for up to 1.6 miles at lower speeds (below approximately 25 mph or 40km/h).

The Hybrid version is identified by select exterior features such as the blue-hued Toyota logos and the model-specific alloy wheels and lower grille, while inside, there's exclusive trim and upholsteries along with a three-dial Optitron gauge panel.

While similar in size with the outgoing model, Toyota says that thanks to some changes including but not limited to, moving the accelerator pedal and front seats forward, repositioning the rear-seat hip point rearward, and reshaping the front seatbacks, rear-knee room has been increased by 1.8-inch while rear middle seat legroom has grown by two inches.

The company also claims to have reduced noise throughout the entire cabin.

The new Camry features a more rigid body structure, revised front suspension and redesigned rear suspension, while it's also the first Toyota to feature the firm's latest electric power steering (EPS) control system. The automaker says these changes instill the new Camry with "greater straight-line stability and crisper steering response, while also enhancing overall ride comfort".

For the 2012 model year, the new Camry and Camry Hybrid will be offered with six-different grades. Tech highlights include the introduction of Toyota's new Entune multimedia system that debuts support for mobile apps, such as Bing, OpenTable, and movietickets.com, along with accessing travel-related services, such as live weather, traffic, fuel information (location and price), stocks, and sports.

Surprisingly, Toyota has dropped pricing of some trim grades to lower levels than its predecessor.

“Despite all of the enhancements to the all-new Camry, prices for all popular models have been reduced with dramatic repositioning on SE, XLE and Hybrid models, representing the best value in the segment,” said Bob Carter, Toyota Group Vice President and General Manager.

The base Camry L with the 2.4-liter engine, however, is priced from $21,955, or $710 more than the previous model.

The Hybrid LE carries an MSRP of $25,900, decrease of $1,150 or 4.3 percent compared to the 2011 model. For more details on pricing, check out the list below.

SE looks fairly clean... Hybrid is the best EPA rated in the class... Not to keen on the blandness of the L and LE models but im sure theyll sell well..

No one can say this is a 'bad car' TOYOTA have been perfecting the recipe for many years and are very successful at what they do. Im sure this design will age very well.

I agree the sonata looks better now by miles, But i guarantee it will not age well.. It will look bloated and garish in about 8 years time

Ok just a update of the 2011 model and nothing to get excited about. Toyota don't you think it is time though to put this jurassic aging car to rest and come out with a new model? This is a Big fail on toyota's part when you have better cars like the new hyundai sonata, the new kia Optima, the new 13 chevy malibu(though i would not buy it since gm wont fix those impala's) The ford fusion, honda accord to just say a few.

guest said... »August 23, 2011

I disagree about the sonata. It will age good. to be honest if you look at the last genration sonata it still look fresh esp when you look at this new toyota.

Itellitlikeitis said... »August 23, 2011

I would buy one if it was pricew under 6.000 dollars, other wise a 10 year old used car will be as good as this.

GoFaster58 said... »August 23, 2011

Finally!  A Toyota that looks halfway decent although it's just a refresh.  I still wouldn't consider it though.  Toyota is so over hyped and overrated. There are other vehicles out there that are just as good or better.

Blkitalian1 said... »August 23, 2011

Its wierd it looks basically the same Toyota normally completely redoes the Camry with each generation into a more boring shape I guess they got lazy this time and decided to recycle the old one.

the last generation sonata was horrible, and the new one is miles better but Adam_computer is correct it will not age well.

Guest said... »August 23, 2011

Oh my God, it's ugly. who the hell designed this piece of crap? and whoever it was, he/she should know that we have to live with this shit for another 4-5 yrs. anyway, thank God for the Kia Optima and the older camry model.

Itellitlikeitis said... »August 23, 2011

calm down, we all knew this was a big fail already

CaliDesigner said... »August 23, 2011

So Toyota blew up the Kia Forte added a dash of awkward and called it a Camry! Still beige and bland, but it is a decent looking car and I am sure it will sell like hotcakes.

D Dix said... »August 23, 2011

How disappointing after all the hype about the "all new" Camry Toyota regurgitates with a few tweaks here and there but it offers nothing newer than what it already builds.

Anonymous said... »August 23, 2011

lol please it would not be so bad if it did look as good as a kia forte sedan. it looks like the lasy generation kia optima. its not bad looking but it's very dated and as anther poster pointed out, toyota dealers will have to sell this thing for 4 to 5 years. I have a feeling though if sells of the camry fall further and faster then they are now, then toyota may fast track a real new model for this updated 2011 model.

anonymous said... »August 23, 2011

I know all that hype for this?

RePhil said... »August 23, 2011

The front and back of the car is OKAY.....but that side..... I have no comment ( mainly because there was no design put into it to comment on). The car looks adequate. :3

Oh really ?    I have a 2007 Sonata now with 150k miles of problem free driving and still going strong. i do recall all the car magazines and car web sites  that have clearly stated that Hyundai's change came with the last generation sonata. As far as the new Sonata aging, the new sonata has already been on the market for 2 years and they only seem to get better looking the more I see them and my friends 2012 black sonata who I work with. Now I'll admit  my sonata styling is only slightly better then the new 2012 Camry's is but then again my sonata was designed in 2004 to 2006 when it lunched, but of cause in all fairness this is not a new Camry model but rather a mild reskin to help it age better. The new sonata will be ten times better looking then the 2012 Camry will be in 10 years because this Camry which is still a  5 year old design that is starting to show it's age badly..Also as far as the last generation sonata, I don't recall being worried if my brakes would stop or my gas pedal would stick like a co worker of mine went though with his 2008 Camry which BTW he has traded in for that black 12MY Sonata.

Honda Accord Euro anyone? With a bit of American FORD Box Sedan?

Red1 said... »August 23, 2011

The 2013 Chevy Malibu doesn't look any better.  The Accord and Fusion are old and soon to be replaced.  The Optima and Sonata, although look nice, the design will get old quick...like the Chrysler 300.

Michaelangelo6972 said... »August 23, 2011

Why does this look like an Altis?? In my opinion, the lower models should look like the higher ones, but in the Camry's case, it is the one who imitated the look of a lower model. Poor design. Not luxurious at all. :| I USED TO LOVE CAMRYs!

Eghaw said... »August 23, 2011

Like classical music and pop music; Camry is a masterpiece of classical music, while those Korean made cars (I could recall Korean people are good in making kimchi) are pop music.  People may all of sudden want to try some Korean kimchi, but they'll go back to their favorite food after a while.

you got a point. camry as boring as classical music/opera/ballet.
OK, not always but mostly.

Rodprynne said... »August 24, 2011

i reluctantly have to admit I'm impressed by it's simple classic attractiveness barring an overly bland front.  I usually knock Toyota styling, particularly the the most recent bloated Corolla, but this I find rather good..........

Chris Eskin said... »August 24, 2011

keep telling yourself that your 2007 sonata is better than this camry if that makes you feel better. it's not. not even close.

Chris Eskin said... »August 24, 2011

Hey Acura, Toyota just stole the redesign of your TSX. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Rick Lyon said... »August 24, 2011

I've always hated Toyota's ground effects kits. I don't like how they flare outward at the bottom, remind me of table cloths or bed skirts. I prefer the German way, and some domestics that taper the kit inward as it nears the bottom of the wheel arch/fender.

toyota 1998 camry pictured above was ok looking in 1998, now when are they going to show us the new 2011 model?

Tastyorange said... »August 25, 2011

The more I look at it, the more I like it. Still better looking than an Accord. Not groundbreaking or very edgy... but clean and smart. Taillights could have been more interesting. Judging by the cuts in the mirrors, it looks like they finally decided to put folding mirrors on the Camry. It's about time. Even the Dodge Avenger has folding mirrors on all but the cheapest model.
Like the stripes in the seats as well.

James Heelis said... »August 27, 2011

You are right. The Koreans have crap for culture because they make kimchi, and we should only buy the Toyota, and never buy anything else. Your wisdom is unsurpassable.

Now let me wipe away my sarcasm, and let you know that I grew up on Kimchi, and my favorite food is Kimchi. Your appeal to racism by degrading Koreans in general by comparing them to your opinion of kimchi is, for a lack of a better word, retarded. The Sonata practically takes a dump on this now 7 year old car.

Far out there said... »August 30, 2011

Simply... The interior is much nicer and not as "old folk" ish as it used to be, however when it comes to exterior styling they should have left it in the oven longer,..... its not done yet.... the meat's still cold... the dough hasn't had a chance to rise.... Ah hell it looks like crap on the outside... anyone falling for this as a "new design" should be shot.

Kenny2 said... »August 31, 2011

It looks like big Corolla. Toyota is a good car maker, but recent all designs are not empressive. Honda is also same, Recnet Honda's designs are worse than Toyota. I don't know why.
Look at Hyundai's and Kia's!

Justin Lee said... »September 03, 2011

Yuck looks like a supersized Axio/Corolla. Why does the wheel resemble a Playstation controller? The driver's dash is still a funky mess. Can't they just line stuff up properly. There's like 4 dials and 3,421 icons.

Slipknot4252 said... »September 07, 2011

i agree that the camry is been looking used and bland and monotoned for a very long time now, but come on, how is that remark racist, w the hell did he say that was racist? my god, u can bad mouth white people all day in this damn country but the least little thing gets said about blacks or mexicans or asian, even if it dosent have anything to do with racism, people go bananas, wow, shut up with the racist crap already

Martinmonna said... »September 20, 2011
