2012 Honda Civic Hatchback Unveiled Ahead of Frankfurt Motor Show

|

The new generation of the European market 2012 Honda Civic hatchback will make its world premiere tomorrow at the 64th International Auto Show in Frankfurt, but the Japanese company is giving us our first view of the car with the release of the official photographs.

The first thing you will notice about the 5-door Civic is of course its exterior styling. While Honda's designers kept the shape of the outgoing model intact, the devil is in the details, and whereas the previous Civic sported a futuristic styling with many creases and edges, its successor is frumpier with a lot more curves.

According to Honda, its designers "wanted to keep the sporty and advanced elements of the car's character but tailor them to express the new model's even more elegant yet dynamic feel", while the company adds that sources of inspiration included a "blended wing body" aeroplane (see picture below) in which the fuselage and wings blend into a single body.

Inside, the styling is very similar to the outgoing Civic 5d with a double layered dashboard combining both analogue and digital displays. Honda says it has improved interior quality as well as passenger space.

Under the sheetmetal, the ninth generation of the Civic sports a heavily revised version of the previous model's suspension system, which means it retains a rear torsion beam. Nevertheless, Honda's engineers claim that the reworked parts will improve the car's ride quality, comfort as well as handling and body control.

We're still waiting for more information on the available powertrains, but Honda previously disclosed that the 2012 Civic 5d will be offered with a revised 2.2-liter i-DTEC engine delivering 150HP, 10 more than the outgoing model's 2.2L CDTi unit. At the same time, CO2 emissions are down 29g/km to 110 g/km, 29 g/km.

Production of the European market hatchback will take place exclusively at Honda’s Swindon plant in the United Kingdom, with sales to start early next year.

Outstanding! Way ahead all current production in class. New
Hyundai i30 already looks dated next to this pearl.

Why they keep taking out ugly pack of metal like they did for North America's Civic....... Am I the only one  who think that new models are for grannies?

Nonilizin said... »September 12, 2011

err! how?

Jesus. I truly have no faith in honda's design team your cars may be reliable but there is no flair in the interior or exterior just a mash of ideas that some idiot approved. There must be some sort of discussion high up the ranks to sort out the design direction of this company. What a damn dissapointment, not going to see a penny of my hard earned.

MoparMan said... »September 12, 2011

I want this! PLEASE bring to North America :)

MoparMan said... »September 12, 2011

you cannot tell, as the first car to market does not mean it was conceived in this order. my bet is honda started the design.

The Si version of the coupe and sedan, delayed by the earthquake rock. Super hot. Yes. The other versions (except for the sexy coupe) are conservative, but there are many distinct models (i.e., hybrid, natural gas, EX, LX) especially as sedans to choose from. I would opt for the Si :)

Rear is nice, front is weird with the dark area... But inside: yeark :(

Seat called... The Boccanegra want its front bumper back.

Wonderdallas said... »September 12, 2011

Painful. A body only a Nissan Juke could love. What's with the stick-on fins below the tail lights? None of the cars angles seem to work with each other.

Remember when you used to see interesting Civics like this on U.S. soil? Good times.

they took a good looking car with a nice interior and turned it into an ugly car, with an interior that looks cheap and terrible good job honda

This is a lot better then the U.S Civic..lets all face it, Honda drop the ball on the U.S civic....It's a shame the uk civic is not a great seller in the uk because it will not help honda no matter how better it is. Btw I like the hyundai Veloster back end...

Looks like Garfield. Not the improvement I expected.
Photo 19 looks nice

any bets this is the new sub TSX Acura?

Djsturge said... »September 12, 2011

If I was to buy one of these (which I wouldn't), it would have to be in black to cover up that hideous black facia in front. Why does honda think this black plastic looks good. The new Hyundai i30 hatch looks way better than this. Honda has lost it.

bmwdrvr said... »September 12, 2011

knowing how Acura is completely destroying Acuras chances as being a legitimate luxury car brand I wouldnt doubt it. Tack on a new acura grill with no other changes and voila a new Acura. Honda is really missing the mark lately for Honda and Acura.

Interesting dash and instrument arrangement.  Having spent a lot of time in a 2007 Civic this is familiar, but the near classic style of that car is lost here.  Honda seems to have bought into the current, lets make it 'odd', look, and in doing so took a few steps back.  I'm sure Hyundai won't be looking back at this model.

Looks busier than a supermarket giving away free iPads.

Honda critics said... »September 13, 2011

Look nice but not outstanding, definately better than the US civic. Hope they'll bring it to Asia.

Florin Negrut said... »September 13, 2011

I own a 2008 Civic hatchback and I was looking forward to purchasing the new model, but now... no way.
The only improvement is the automatic transmission... the old one sucked.

Florin Negrut said... »September 13, 2011

They also messed up the Civic logotype.

iksi said... »September 13, 2011

disappointment :/ my type S from 2008 look much better and younger! :)) And new civic comes in five-door form only. The three-door has been dropped!!!? omg...

Mooly Dane_33 said... »September 13, 2011

The SEXINESS!

A big big leap from Honda. Truly looks Futuristic and elegant the same time. Currently no car looks like this. They could have made the sedan also in similar concept but you don't get it all good.

Max said... »September 13, 2011

Guess I'll be buying an accord next, I LOVE my current 09 civic, one of the best looking cars about, but this is....Horrible ! The rear lights are nasty and that plastic thing on the front, ugh. Don't do it Honda !!!

Anonymous said... »September 13, 2011

Looks great as a five door can. Looks alot better than rivals out at the moment. Sounds Like above do not like change. And Hyundai over Honda? Please!!!!!

BK said... »September 13, 2011

current model looks much better. now I'll move on to other brands

BazZtarD said... »September 14, 2011

This model looks like a scaled insight. But I guess this is part of Honda's strategy to present itself as eco-friendly yet sporty.
I like the front, but the rear is a way out of proportion. In my opinion it is however not an improvement in comparison to the '09 model.

lukas said... »September 15, 2011

Where did you hear the 3 door version has been dropped? I heared awhile ago it was in the plan, however wasn't due till late 2012...if you have something on the story, send the link pls? Thnx

One of the ugliest new cars since last few years.

Rodprynne said... »October 03, 2011

apparently very poor use of space with an alarmingly cramped looking glasshouse in attempt at sleekness...

victor321 said... »October 14, 2011

i don't find it nice looking.   the front is quite ugly.   the rear looks okay.   but the whole is not the sum of its parts.   overall, it just does not look pleasing to the eye.   even american cars like the chevrolet sonic and the latest ford focus look better than this.   mazda 3, lexus hybrid 200h, vw golf also look better.    why do honda designers keep coming out with such ugly cars???

Spyt said... »November 26, 2011

I would rather push my 09 civic than drive the new civic

If Honda refuses to sell the 5 door hatchback in the U.S then FUCK THEM! Just for being the dickheads they are, I will just buy the Mazda 3 5 door hatch instead! At least Mazda gives you a thumping Bose 10 speaker system and 155hp instead of Honda's wimpy 140hp. Honda may say fuck America but now Americans can say FUCK HONDA!

Mike Bedrick said... »February 09, 2012

we need this car in the U.S. as a 2 door.  250 lb  6'  52' chested athletic Americans want a small, green, eco friendly, FUN and SPORTY basic car to drive.  No pwr windows, no pwr doorlocks, no pwr mirrors, just basic fun in a 2 door so we can get in and out without messing up our business suits!
We still have a '97 Civic 2 door hatch that turns heads.  It still looks sporty and many people think its new, accept for the rear bumber bang!
Let's make it in the U.S. in a union shop.  We need living wage jobs along with a great looking and performing car.
