As previously reported, the Renault 4 Ever Design Competition is asking the world’s up-and-coming designers to pen a modernised take on the brand’s iconic Quatrelle hatchback.
Here’s one design that really impressed us: Italian David Obendorfer’s “Revival of a Childhood Impression”. Like Fiat’s Nuova 500, Obendorfer’s Revival takes the classic lines of its inspiration and wraps them around modern underpinnings.
Obendorfer explains:
“I have explored the nature of this model's surfaces and tried to capture the proportions that give it a strong personality. [Such] features are the r4's long wheelbase, quite short front overhang, car body with a typical forward-facing incline, different front and back fenders, front headlights close to each other, straight rear hatch, etc. [Of] course it has been necessary to update the vehicle volumes respecting - among other things - the standard for pedestrians' protection and the current requirements of safety and comfort in general.”
In other words, the Revival is a homage that does not skimp on creature comforts and occupant safety. It’s like the Hyundai i30 Estate in a way; a five-door hatchback with a wagon-sized boot.
It’s a modern design with retro-styling cues, perhaps designed to be built on an existing architecture. And like most new cars today, the Revival has been designed with alternative power plants – such as hybrid and all-electric ones – in mind.
Much like the exterior, the interior is attractive in its simplicity. The instrument panel retains the look-and-feel of the original Quatrelle, though uses an LCD screen that folds away when the engine is switched off in place of analogue gauges.
There’s also an LCD satellite navigation screen, a dashboard-mounted shift lever and conventional push button / turn knob controls for the radio and HVAC.
Of all the entrants, I feel this one looks the most production-ready. It surprises with its practicality: how it’s not some way-out design for a future that will never come.
Obendorfer’s Revival was one of the fifty projects shortlisted in DesignBoom’s Renault 4 Ever competition, and is definitely one of our favourites. You can check out our full gallery below and leave a comment if you wish.

I kind of like it? First thing that came to my mind was actually Trabant. We all remember Trabant, right? lol
I like it! It should give London taxis some competition.
Very very interesting! I kind of like it too! (:
If Renault ever made this I would buy it in an instant!! I fell in love with the old Renault 4 as a kid, an uncle & aunt had one and it was a world away from the company car escorts/cortinas/cavaliers my dad, and everyone else had, it had sliding windows, a gear stick coming out of the dashboard, removable seats, a rubber floor, it also had buckets of charm.
This reinterpretation looks fantastic, retaining all the right styling ques, and really, it's not overtly 'retro', i'm also loving the clean-cut and logical interior too, this design looks so feasable for production, if I had my way I'd not bother with the new Clio and make this instead! Sadly, it's unlikely there's room in Renaults latest Dezir design phase.
Well done to David Obenderfor for this wonderful design, and best of all, you've done one in the old smoky blue colour I loved so much;-)
Moche
Great concept - reminds me of my first car, 1969 Renault 10 - would love to see more of these concepts from the competition...
Well.....ugly.
very very nice, judging by most responses it's safe to say congratulations to David Obendorfer, it is indeed stunning, clean and unclattered contrary to most concepts.... a total breath of fresh air!
super kurwa ! wykop was jebie w dupy
Now, this is pretty damn cool for retro revival (albeit only CGI). I'd ride shotgun in real-life should it make to production.
I usually skip Carscoop posts about anonymous designers concepts, but I have to admit this one its well executed. Very nice proposal.
i like it,all manufactures should have a retro choice
take a grandpa and redesign him.how "innovative"
No no no no... and no...
To do a re make of a old car... there's a saying: "Shit in - Shit out"
Renault 4 was a horrible car.
