New Toyota FT-86 Revealed Through Leaked Japanese Brochure?

|

It's almost time for the official unveiling of the production version of the Toyota FT-86 rear-wheel drive coupe, which means you should probably brace yourself for a barrage of photos and details over the next few weeks.

The first wave comes through a set of leaked brochure scans that seem to be legit. The FT-86 depicted in these pictures is the Japanese domestic market Modellista version that has been accessorized by Toyota's in-house customization company.

Among other bespoke features that you won't see on the base model is the exterior aero package that comprises of a front spoiler, beefier side skirts and a two-piece rear apron, along with the model-specific alloy wheels.

If these scans are indeed real, then Toyota has once again altered the exterior styling of the FT-86.

Compared to the most recent concept version shown at the Geneva and Frankfurt Motor Shows, at the front, the coupe gets redesigned headlamps and a new front bumper design that loses the tear drop-style LEDs, while at the back, both the tail lights and the rear bumper feature new designs.

The brochure also give us our very first look at the FT-86's interior, which in the Modellista's case, is trimmed in red accents.

No word on the powertrain details yet, but we'll keep an eye open and post any new updates.

Kudos to Cristi S. for the tip!

Designed by Walmart?

If this is the final version, I am a bit disapointed about the rear lights. Both Scion and previous Toyota versions looked much better.

It's got a Modellista (Toyota's in-house tuner) sport kit.
Standard versions will look a little less aggressive.

I don't know what they were thinking with the tail light redesign... It's like someone said, hey let's put cheap looking tail lights on it. Horrible, last version was a winner, this, not.

What did you guys expect? It's not perfect, not at all, but I think they did a pretty good job converting the concept into a actual car. If you take a look at other concepts and how they turned out in reality, then you should realize, that there's nothing to complain about.

I saw the concept, heard their technical visions and just hoped that this car could one day be bought, with as less changes made as possible. When I see now how the car turned out then I'm still stunned. All my big criterias are fulfilled and it doesn't look too much worse than the first FT-86 concept, just great!

it took Toyota a freaking long time to design a freaking ugly car, no wonder why Toyota wants to unveil near Halloween. FT stands for Frankenstein Toyota.

I really like what I see. OK, the Modellista Kit is overkill. Not a big fan of such body kits. But the actual FT is nice! Some different wheels and it's a winner for me!

Bland, lacks character, rather like many of the Japanese designs of the 80s.

Nice looking car, it reminds me of a Ferrari 612 Scaglietti coupe...Toyota sure can copy and paste great. Its a shame they can copy and paste the reliability that used to make in cars back in the eighties and nineties. Oh well what a waste on  such a beautiful copy and paste.

The Japanese have been copying the best designs of the Italians since the 50s, only the cars they build are available to a much greater segment of the population being much more affordable, and they're often more reliable than what the Italians have produced.

Ironically in this century it is the Italians and Germans and Americans who have tried to copy the accomplishments of the Japanese automakers and often found themselves failing miserably to do so, specifically in the realms of electronics and product reliability. Only the Koreans have been able to surpass them in those areas but they too achieve their success by copying the Japanese model.

Copying the best things your competition does is good for everyone, from the company's bottom line, to the consumers who buy the products. Innovation eventually reaches everyone in this way.

Of course back in the 80's they used to say character was having a spot of oil on your drive way and the problems that you had to live with that your car would cause. F' that what are you refering to when you say character??

Almost 5 trillion times better than the latest concept car (the headlights were not wrong, but the shape of the windows!)

T3H_G04T said... »October 29, 2011

Actually personally I like it way more than the concept. It looks like a real car now, not like a plastic toy that'll be unbearable to live with. Now it's got a way better balanced mix of sharp edges and curves.

headlights and taillights are ugly, it was better looking as a concept
