Mercedes' big hardtop roadster model is entering its final development phase as we near closer to the next generation SL's launch date in the second half of 2012.
The current iteration of the SL, codenamed R320, has been in production since 2001 having received two facelifts, one in 2006 and another, more extensive makeover, in 2008.
The next SL will be brand new from the bottom up sporting a new platform architecture while sharing certain key components such as the suspension bits and electrical systems with the SLS AMG.
Power will come from a new engine lineup comprising of an entry level, naturally-aspirated V6 with a turbocharged variant being a strong possibility. A 4.7-liter twin-turbo V8 and in the case of the SL 63 AMG, a 5.5-liter bi-turbocharged V8 producing close to 570-horses will complete the initial range.
It is not yet certain if the SL 65 AMG with a V12 powerplant will survive in the next generation of the SL.
Mercedes engineers have nixed the heavy plastic cladding on the most recent prototypes of the new SL giving us a better view of the design details such as the boxy front end and the large wraparound tail lamps.
We also get a peek at the two-piece electric folding hardtop that features the same Magic Sky Control system found on the smaller SLK allowing the driver to change the tint of the glass roof from dark to clear.

They are actually going to offer an actual color other than grey silver white or black?
