As it turns out, there's much more than meets the eye to the facelifted Hyundai Genesis Coupe, which is slated to reach North American showrooms sometime next year as a 2013 model year.
Following the Genesis Coupe's presentation at the Korea Speed Festival 2011 in Yeongam, Korea, on Saturday, November 12, Hyundai released preliminary details on its refreshed sports car.
While our intel on the replacement of the Lambda 3.8-liter MPi with Hyundai's newer Lambda 3.8-liter GDi was correct, instead of producing 333 horsepower and a peak torque of 291 lb.-ft as it does on the revised Genesis sedan, the V6 engine with direct-injection technology was further honed and puts out 350-horses and 40.8kg.m (295 lb-ft or 400Nm).
That's an improvement of 43HP and 29 lb-ft over the current V6 model, giving the Genesis Coupe a significant power advantage over Detroit's V6-powered pony cars like the Dodge Challenger (305HP V6), the Ford Mustang (305HP V6) and the Chevrolet Camaro (323HP V6).
Hyundai adds that, "in order to raise the emotional quality in the Lambda 3.8 GDi model, a sound generator is applied to replace the rough engine sound with a classy and sporty sound."
The South Korean automaker also updated the Genesis Coupe's base engine, replacing the current model's 2.0-liter turbocharged-four that produces 210HP and 223 lb-ft of peak torque, with the Sonata Turbo's Theta 2.0 TCi featuring a larger radiator intercooler and a twin-scroll turbocharger. The new 2.0-liter turbo churns out 275-horsespower and 38kg.m (275 lb-ft or 372Nm) of peak torque.
The good news continues as Hyundai confirmed that both engines will be offered with the South Korean firm's eight-speed automatic transmission that replaces the current 2.0-liter Turbo's 5-speed auto and the 3.8-liter V6's 6-speed auto. Both models will be offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox as well.
As mentioned in our previous posts, the 2013MY Genesis Coupe inherits the Veloster's new hexagonal grille along with restyled headlights and LED positioning lamps, plus revised tail lamps with LEDs and a brand new center console that includes a standard multi-gauge located above the air-conditioning controls.
Stay tuned, as we'll bring you more on the refreshed Genesis Coupe as it comes in.

If you don't know how a turbo works, this article gives a great explanation on it.

A eight-speed automatic transmission should really help return better MPG then the american v6 pony cars MPG's figures.
The v6 350 hp engine is really great but still I want to see the 5.0 from the genesis sedan in the coupe too....
Hyundai is really a trend setter now, haters may still hate but hyundai has arrived.
350 hp? That makes up for the face. May consider one.

I like the extra power, but the front end is really ugly. It's like the front and the back do not communicate with eachother, the back looks nice and classy while the front is busy and vulgar.
Sounds like a good package but the front end is VERY busy ... the old one looked a bit more mature and cleaner
It'll be interesting to see how this matches up against the Mustang GT.
"sound generator" What the ......@#%^@$^ It's not an EV.Ok! What is the actual reported HP of the '2.0 T... 271 HP or 275 HP? Same for the '3.8' ...we seem to be getting a lot of different HP ratings for both engines.
The correct numbers for the Korean market model are: 3.8L V6 350PS (which is equal to 345HP) and 2.0L Turbo 275PS (that equals 271HP)
It is a great automobile! Shining like a fire!
HI! John, The power ratings are stated in the article as if they are SAE ratings when compared to the US competitors models. PS ratings are not mentioned. Torque ratings are given in several engineering standards for comparison. Thanks for the clarification.
