This is the New Acura / Honda NSX Sports Hybrid Concept that will Enter Production by 2015

Acura has just introduced the NSX Concept at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and these are the first official photos.

The Japanese automaker has shown several concept models over the years for a replacement to the iconic Honda / Acura NSX that was built from 1990 until 2005, but for one reason or the other, none of them managed to reach the production phase

This time, however, Acura says the NSX Concept is the real deal with the production model to debut within the next three years. Interestingly, Acura says that it will developed by an engineering team led by Honda R&D Americas, and manufactured in Ohio, at a yet to be named facility.

Like the original model, the NSX features a mid-mounted naturally aspirated V6 engine but with a twist; Acura's engineers added the firm's Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive) hybrid system that utilizes three electric motors.

The next VTEC V6 engine comes with direct-injection and is linked to a dual clutch transmission with built-in electric motor. In addition, two-motor electric-drive unit can provide torque to the front wheels during cornering to improve handling.

"This Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system will make NSX the ultimate expression of Acura's idea to create synergy between man and machine," said Takanobu Ito, president and CEO of Honda Motor. "The NSX will make the driver one with the car to enhance dynamic driving abilities without getting in the way."

"Like the first NSX, we will again express high performance through engineering efficiency," added Ito, who led the development of Acura's first NSX supercar. "In this new era, even as we focus on the fun to drive spirit of the NSX, I think a supercar must respond positively to environmental responsibilities."

The new NSX also employs lightweight materials while its styling doesn't bear many similarities to the original model.

Another concept ? whatever happens to the one that Honda tested a few years back and decided to kill when 2008 economy hit the bottom. Just bring that back to life, sell a few, when this concept is ready for the market (10 yrs from now), then sell this one.
One thing I learn about R&D is that it only costs money, it does not really make any.

Where is the engine is this front or mid engined hard to tell by the styling? Also, its a nice looking car but seriously for a super car its a tad bit generic and a little boring. If the "ultimate" Acura looks like this I can only imagine what the rest of the lineup will look  like more boring styling and knowing Acura cheap looking cabins with WAY to much plastic for their prices..

Give me mine in that same color.  WOW

Looks like it may be mid-engined.

Learn to read before replying:
"Like the original model, the NSX features a mid-mounted naturally aspirated V6 engine..."
And if you can't tell by the styling where the engine is fitted, than you probably think a Porsche is front wheel drive don't ya?

DEFINITELY, my next sports car purchase.  I can't wait to leave a deposit with Acura on the incredible NSX.  Looking forward to seeing the convertible also which I know will be featured in the upcoming Avengers film.  They have a long road ahead to redeem themselves with passenger sedans but Acura nailed it with the return of the NSX.  Great job Acura!!

No shit! R&D isn't suppose to make money! By it's very nature, it's entirely RESEARCH, and if warranted, DEVELOPMENT.

I bet you'll tell me astronautics isn't worth anything because all the probes sent to Mars and beyond haven't brought back a dime to Nasa.

I'm going home to make sweet love to my wife and then ask her if we can trade in our station wagon for this fine tuned, reliable, mid-engine, and hopefully affordable sweet car. I already have a name for her...Sasha.

How can Acura make this? It is truly 2012

I wonder what the combined HP rating between the engine and the electric motors would be?  I guess I should think of this car having a drive system in line to what Porsche is doing with the 918 Spyder. Additionally, if what Honda says is true and this is manufactured in Ohio that make it one of the most sophisticated car's ever produced in the United States, this is certainly going to be a very intriguing car!

I remember a few years back when Honda introduced the HSC concept which was meant to be the next NSX, but it never made it to production.
I bet that the lazy folks at Honda are using the same chassic from the HSC and put new skin on it and call it the NSX concept.
the only reason they created this buzz is to get people back into the Acura show room, and hopefully get some of the ugly slow sale Acura models selling.
