Autocar Compares Nissan GT-R with…BMW M5 Sedan

|

If you thought Road & Track's comparo with the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and the Nissan GT-R was kind of a stretch given the huge price difference between the two coupes, we wonder what you'll have to say about Autocar's video test of the Nissan GT-R and the BMW M5 saloon.

The British magazine admits that the BMW M5 and Nissan GT-R "are not conventional rivals" but adds that both "have around 550bhp, cost nearly £75k and promise brutal performance" which it says, justifies a comparison.

To the surprise of the person who thought about the comparison and no one else, the Nissan GT-R, a purpose built sports coupe, beat the M5 executive sports sedan in acceleration, braking, handling, cornering and feel. Nevertheless, the video has garnered more than 200k views on Youtube so mission accomplished...

Neat video but, the BMW M5 never says it can compete with a super car status vehicle which is basically what the GTR is.  It's a fast sedan which for its weight, did a pretty good job when going against the GTR.

who would crossshop these 2 cars?

Same price, same hp so why is the GT-R a supercar when compared to the M5?

Quadro said... »February 08, 2012

Because the M5 is a sedan with a list of ammenities and the GTR is just an engine with performance-oriented electronics; the GTR has only one purpose and that's to go fast. The M5 is meant to be fast and accomodating -- that's why it's not a supercar, along with the fact that it can't beat another supercar and price is not the only deciding factor.

Same price and same hp... maybe. 2-door vs. 4. Why don't you compare the weight too? How about the fact that Nissan is V6 vs. V8. Again, less weight. Diffrent classes and diffrent purpose. Oh, and AWD vs. RWD? I don't know, but kind of apples to oranges really. Useless comparison IMO. Better comparison would be RS6 vs. M5.

By definition, a supercar can't have 4 doors. It is a coupe, maybe a 2+2 in some cases.

In a straight line, 0-60 the GT-R is a 4sec car, on a bad day.  Mid 3s on a good day. On those stats alone, it is faster than almost ever Ferrari, Lambo and Porsche outside of the racing trims(maybe the Turbo edges it by a couple hundredths of a second...)

That doesn't take the 4WD system into account, possibly the best system in any car, period.  It puts the GT-R on rails and whatever the GT-R loses on pure HP, it can make up on with tight cornering.

Oh and it isn't a light vehicle in any way shape or form.  It is way heavier than Porsche.

No.

You don't compare M5 to GTR. Yes both have the same amount of HP and the same price, but their purpose is totaly different. The M5 brings you somewhere very fast and in a total confort. That car is for business men who have a ''devil side'' inside them. The GTR is for a different clientelle and it is built with a different scope. I'm am a M5 fan , but even if the GTR is faster than the BMW, I will still chose the M5. The M5 is faster than the majority of Ferrari, faster than the Gallordo, than the E63 AMG and so. The M5 iis the bench mark. and it will always be.

Even if two cars have the same amount of HP, if one is RWD and the other AWD, you cannot compare them.

The M5 can do 0-100 KPH in 3.8sec.
here you can see it in 4.0 sec, but I don't remember where I saw, but it can do it in 3.8s. That is 458 Italia time.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wzv2Bc4ylGY

it almost like autocar were feed up with the m5's reviews so decided to put a 2 door coupe which weighs a 250 kg less up against it, why not do a 40-60 60-100 where the weight would be less of a factor. why not use both lunch control systems the gtr would still of won but it would of been closer. it was almost that they were try to embarrass the m5. anyway the fact they are comparing a luxury saloon car against a out and out performance  speaks volumes for BMW.

Apparently, Trustmeh, critical discernment is not one of your mental skills.  But then I suspect your challenged mentally as a general condition.     Sand box mentality is still 'in situ'.

Thanks for that Aaron, do you actually know a BMW owner. And have you actually, ever, driven a BMW, Porsche 911, or Corvette(?), let alone owned one.

Do you have issues or are you off your meds?

Your comments of late(Corvette/911_M5_GT-R) are seriously suspect and don't lead to increased credibility on this site(except with the sandbox mentality crowd). I was encouraged that you might be one of the brighter lights on this site.  You have made some insightful comments in the past and I was looking forward too more.

By the way, I own 4 BMW's so I must be a serious ASSHOLE!

 Typical BMW driving ass-hole, can't take a joke. :)

Aaron,  now you have employed dishonesty...such a disappointment.

Remember that credibility thing.  An apology would have served you better, but maybe lack of respect for self, leads to disrespect of others.  Tell me, could you show your comments to your mother?
