Hyundai Debuts New 2013 Elantra Coupe to Take on the Honda Civic

|

The GT hatchback isn't the only addition Hyundai is making to the Elantra's North American lineup as the South Korean automaker also revealed the sporty looking Coupe model at the Chicago Auto Show.

While pretty simple in its execution, the transformation from four-door sedan to a two-door coupe seems to work visually.

Aside from the elongated front doors, the Coupe also gets different fog lamp surrounds, black trim on the lower part of the rear bumper and a new trunk incorporating a spoiler in the design.

It's also half an inch longer than the sedan at 178.7-inches, while the rest of the dimensions remaine the same at 69.9-inches wide, 56.5-incnes tall with a 106.3-in. wheelbase.

Hyundai says that the Elantra Coupe's total interior volume of 110.2 cubic feet and 14.8 cubic feet trunk both exceed the 2012 Honda Civic Coupe and 2012 Kia Forte Koup by "large margins".

There are no surprises under the hood with the Coupe sharing the same 1.8-liter four-pot with 148-horsepower and 131 lb-ft of torque found in the sedan and hatchback models of the Elantra series.

Power is transferred to the front wheels through a six-speed automatic that returns an estimated 28 mpg city and 39 mpg highway, or a 6sp manual gearbox delivering 29 mpg city and 40 mpg highway

The new Elantra Coupe will arrive in U.S. dealerships later this year.

I dont like this car. The front is much to short and the whole car is much too busy... The Civic looks much better and in 5 years it go on driving, while the Hyundai is broken...

In 5 years the Hyundai is broken.. What the HECK are you talking about? How long have you been sleeping? You could have given crap to Hyundai by noticing the material quality in some of their cars (very few nowadays, but that's my personal view) but you chose reliability, wrong way dude.

This looks much much better than the Honda Civic! The Elantra coupe has sculpted front end, flowing lines on the sides, a sculpted in rear deck spoiler. The Civic has angular front, slab sides, and flat rear deck, basically, a door stop!

Its not that Hyundai has poor reliab.. in fact its now close to Japanese makers. Either way both are very very good.

I'm underwhelmed. The sedan is quite funky for what it is. I thought it would translate into a curvaceous coupe, but this looks dull and pedestrian . Maybe red is not the best color, but it looks very slab sided. As stated by another, this looks unimaginative and "lazy." A missed opportunity.

Your views are stuck in the past. Hyundai has shown great imagination in their new stylings (take the Veloster for example) and build quality has improved greatly. And show me a manufacturer (other than Kia) who offers more content for the dollar.

A door stop does its job and so too a Civic..great fuel efficiency, great handling and stability and the door stop looks sleek if you hold it up and see properly, and the civic looks much more beautiful than a door stop. Its an Icon Car. Also all designs have angles.
You need to think before you dive.
